Avalanching Avalanche! Introduction to Art Archives XV

Keio University Art Center
Finished
The emergence of conceptual art expanded the boundaries of what materials and spaces art avails. Similarly, there have also been new approaches to printed matter, such as magazines, newspapers and catalogs. This exhibition will introduce the magazine “Avalanche,” which ran from 1970 to 1976, and consider the relationship between printed matter and art. There were various attempts to intervene in how magazines and widely distributed periodicals were developing from the mid-1960’s onward, one example being Dan Graham’s intervention in the March 1968 issue of Harpar’s Bazaar, where his work “Figurative” was printed. In 1970, Seth Siegelaub chose the July/August edition of magazine Studio International as the site for his next exhibition. It was amid such trends that the artist journal “Avalanche” was established in New York by independent curator Willoughby Sharp and editor Liza Béar. The 13 issues were published intermittently over a seven-year period. Rather than promoting the opinions of critics, this magazine was comprised of text and interviews by artists, functioning as a medium for conveying the thoughts of those artists who were strengthening their conceptual tendencies. The artists were also involved in the layout of the magazine. By examining this seminal publication you can also explore the artwork of this period.
