Artists

Rafaël Rozendaal
This exhibition focuses on Rafaël Rozendaal’s “Abstract Browsing Tapestries” series created with abstract browsing.net, a program the artist developed in 2014. These paintings are abstractions of webpages’ brightly colored geometric patterns reversed by Rozendaal’s program using images, compositions, texts, and other site data.

Several works from “Shadow Objects,” Rozendaal’s latest series, are also on display. These laser-cut aluminum plates taking on diverse geometric forms with shading are produced with optimal efficiency in their use of materials, calculated with industrial budgeting algorithms. Their appearances are determined by the light of their exhibition space and the perspective of the viewer. While light and shadow have been features of countless masterpieces of art history, Rozendaal’s works possess feeling entirely different than – for instance – the spirituality of Monet’s “Cathédrales de Rouen.” These compositions of light and shadow can also be seen in Rozendaal’s web-based works: “le dumchamp.com,” inspired by Duchamp’s “Bicycle Wheel,” simplifies the cause-and-effect relationship between object and shadow. In referencing Donald Judd’s “Specific Objects,” Rozendaal’s “Shadow Objects” and other works initiate a redevelopment of American hard conceptual art with a new contemporary feeling.
