Psychiatrist Ryutaro Takahashi is a prolific collector of contemporary art who has purchased around 2500 works to date. This exhibition introduces the essence of contemporary Japanese art since the 1990s through works picked out by Takahashi, arranging these according to three riddles. By exhibiting works produced by multiple artists within the same space, a sense of the expressive characteristics that have emerged in Japanese art over the last quarter of a century becomes dramatically apparent. Meanwhile, there will be works from the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art Collection displayed alongside these pieces in a move that is inspired by Takahashi’s belief that Japan’s traditional art and contemporary Japanese of the 1990s and thereafter is inextricably linked. Here you can explore the relationship between these works that transcend time and exhibit somewhat similar motifs, but whose meanings also differ greatly in context of when they were produced. Enjoy the strange delight of seeing these two collections combined.
