Comic Anthology “Gouffre” Release Exhibition

Institut français du Japon - Tokyo
Finished
For this project organized in collaboration with Tokyo Art Book Fair 2017, Institut français du Japon - Tokyo will hold an exhibition marking the release of comic anthology, “Gouffre.” Following on from “Lagon”, “Volcan” and “Dôme,” “Gouffre” is the latest publication in this series that brings together daring and wonderfully imaginative Franco-Belgian comics with high artistic appeal.
The works in this volume differ from the classic graphic novels of the Franco-Belgian comic genre, produced instead by creators who experiment with new approaches and take their lead from contemporary art, architecture, video games, and graphic design. The colors reflect brightly off of the pages, which are packed with diverse motifs, and rather than focusing on story, it is the medium of Franco-Belgian comics and prints methods that are explored.
Works by a total of 35 international artists are featured in this publication, including that of Marie Jacotey, Idir Davaine, Roxane Lumeret, Olivier Schrauwen, Simon Hanselmann, and many other emerging names. Half of these artists are French. Meanwhile, representing Japan are Tiger Tateishi, Jiro Ishikawa and Shiwashiwa. Part of their drawings, fragments of their works, and illustrations will be exhibited here in a new format by using various reproduction techniques, such as glass and acrylic laser processing, and 3D printing.
