Shigeyuki Cho
In 1944, Shigeyuki Cho moved to Ashikaga, his father’s hometown. He started producing art in the 1960s, while working for a local gas company and hospital. Since then, Cho has created artworks in accordance with specific concepts such as “boundaries and territories,” “the revolt of materials,” and “life and beyond.” Driven by his unique insight, these concepts also include “abyss of the everyday life,” “material abundance,” and “spirit of the subconscious.” Cho first exhibited “Pickpocket 68,” an oversized pocket sewn to the frame of a canvas, in 1968, and a decade later, in 1978, presented “Thalamus 1.” These two works were then continued as serials. They were presented alongside events such as “Roadwork” and performances including “Attachment,” both of which were conceived through physical actions of the body and continue to influence his art today. Following this period, Cho exhibited “Hei-Men-Tai (Plane Figure)” and “River Bed” with rigorous consistency. In his latest work, Cho refers to Analects of Confucius, a collection of sayings and ideas attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius and his contemporaries.

Motivated by the birth of his eldest daughter, who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Cho has worked with handicapped people since the late 1960s, organizing exhibitions and producing collaborative works. This involvement is a key part of his artistic activity.
