Established in 2014, Ground is a group formed of five artists that share a common interest in the possibilities of painting as a medium and explore this consciously in their practice. What is the role of painting in the current visual environment where we are overwhelmed with images and flooded with vast amounts of information, and the attitude of the painter and painting itself are subject to aesthetic and psychological interrogation? This group organizes exhibitions and symposiums that differ from individual artists’ activities in the way that they create a ground - place - to explore a multifaceted view of painting with respect to the functional aspects and possibilities of the medium.

In this exhibition, two different editions of the latest work produced by “Ground α” will be presented, including a regular edition and a special edition that comes complete with drawings. All 10 limited edition drawings will be on exhibit here.

Ground investigates the possibility of painting through exhibitions and dialogue, encouraging viewers to think about paintings and questions relating to painting. Rather than settling on established ideas of art, the group believes that possibilities develop continuously, sometimes momentarily and, on occasion, inevitably. As the role of painting appears to weaken due to the advancement and diversification of the media in recent years, the group is keen to discover as yet unseen possibilities that will broaden the reach of the medium. It is worth mentioning that some of the members are cautious about even using the word “painting,” as they find it problematic to sum up in one word this diverse and broad practice.
