Taewon Heo
Taewon Heo has been spotting and collecting images of paintings from various places since 2005. For him, painting includes “painting as an art form,” “painting techniques,” and “painting as an act of painting.”
His images in this series have basically the same properties as artist’s own so-called paintings, in that they include the application of paint and sometimes result in similar depictions to those found in color field studies or monochrome painting. Previously, Heo produced a work called “A pair of paintings,” which mimicked the paint mark of a janitor on the canvas and juxtaposed it with the paint mark of a photo. If the artist’s paintings and paintings by janitors can produce the same image, how should they be distinguished, as art and non-art? The purpose of this exhibition is to overlap the context of the two different types of paintings, by showing a janitor’s painting in a space that also shows the artist’s painting. As the context surrounding “painting as an act of painting” and “painting as an art form” overlaps, the exhibition space becomes a space for questions.
