This exhibition will introduce the research and artistic practice of contemporary art collective “History in Art,” a study-focused group comprised of artists, critics and various other individuals involved in the art world. Established in 2013, the group formed when members came together to read a text by German historian Aleida Assmann (b.1947), who has written extensively on history and cultural memory. Assmann locates things in history that fluctuate and change their shape, such as memories, experiences, and oral accounts. Such tendencies can also be observed in art. In his documentary “The Act of Killing,” Joshua Oppenheimer explores the historical acts of Communist Party Leaders in Indonesia in 1965 through the memory of the men in question. In another example, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s two works presented at Documenta 13 examine past experiences through sound installations and audio walks, encouraging audiences to confuse their realities and conflate past and present. The topical films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul also interweave documentary and fiction to create a layering of histories and individual narratives.

This exhibition will center on aspects of history that have been left unrecorded and under discussed in the public sphere. It will present group and individual works informed by different approaches to history and historiography. In addition to participating in activities such as reading groups and discussions, members practice as artists and critics. This is a chance to see their works, texts and future projects showcased.
