“Under construction” (1984) is the title of a legendary project by Tadashi Kawamata, a pioneer of urban installations, that was to be carried out at Hillside Terrace but was canceled just one week ahead of the start date. Later, the “Reproduction and Memory” exhibition was held in 1996, just before the 70 year old Dojunakai apartment complex in Daikanyama was dismantled. Kawamata will resume his “Under construction” project, almost 33 years after it was started, in the location of the soon to be defunct pedestrian bridge situated in front of the Sarugaku-cho police box in Daikanyama. Daikanyama is a place where art acts as an intermediary that links the past and present, as well as the place and people, illuminating the changing city.
In this symposium, BankArt 1929 representative Osamu Ikeda will appear in conversation with art historian Kenji Kajiya, and Yusuke Nakahara, who has been involved in numerous Daikanyama art projects.
