Kanda Matsuri, a festival that started in the early seventeenth century and is now known as one of the three great Shinto festivals in Tokyo, will be held once again this year. As always it will host a parade of mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines) that across town on a route that ends back at Kanda Myojin Shrine, accessed via Manseibashi Bridge from Nihonbashi. As is evident from this historic event, both the ancient capital of Edo and Tokyo are cities comprised of rivers and bridges. If one wants to look back at how has life changed here over the years, bridges may be a helpful clue. This exhibition takes you on a trip back in time through a selection of old photographs, maps and picture postcards depicting bridges and roads.
