Takako Azami
Overlapping black dots blot out the foliage of powerful trees filling spaces of sunlight and air with their branches. Takako Azami uses the unique technique of painting on the reverse side of the page so that ink bleeds through to the other side. Her works displaying both concrete and abstract aspects have a mysterious charm, perhaps explained by their affinity to classical ink painting, reminiscent of Buson Yosa, combined with their remarkably contemporary expressions. Remaining loyal to paper, ink, and mineral pigments, Azami continues to carry on classical Nihonga painting traditions while breaking new ground.
