2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels, a museum that was established by water and ink painter Iri Maruki (1901-1995) and his wife, oil painter Toshi Maruki (1912-2000), for the purpose of permanently exhibiting images relating to the atomic bomb.
This exhibition will present work by photographer Seiichi Motohashi (1940-) who photographs people about town. He met the Maruki’s in the mid-1980s after visiting the museum and began shooting the couple going about their daily lives. Through his photographs the exhibition will rethink the meaning of Mr. and Mrs. Maruki’s life and work.
