2D Printers: The fight for the world’s approval

Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts
Finished
Previously Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts has tried to show the relationship and difference between scientific thought and fine art through exhibitions such as “Pictorial Evolution of Pictures”(2011) and ”Thermodynamics of the Sun”(2014). The aim of “2D Printers” is to focus on the concept of “utility” in art.

Since the seventeenth century, when the terminology “fine art” first emerged, scientists looked up to art, because art was able to display the glory of the kings and government. Art had “utility.” But from nineteenth century onward, artists began to abandon such utility, allowing themselves a new autonomy. Consequently, the myth that art no longer has utility was born. This is while science has displayed an increasing sense of utility that has developed hand in hand with the idea of technique and, subsequently, technology. The twenty-first century has welcomed the advent of 3D printing, which has attracted public attention for its direct contributions to human life, supporting medical treatments and various social systems. But what about other types of printers, such as photocopiers, which feature in both art and life.

This exhibition will explore whether it is still useful to critique art in terms of its autonomous value in the twenty-first century, or whether considering social value may be a better approach. Roughly 200 works will be presented here, including paintings, drawings and sculptures, as well as reproducible media such as photographs, woodcut prints, videos, and other printed items.
