Christiane Löhr
This is the third solo exhibition by German sculptor Christiane Löhr at Taguchi Fine Art. Löhr’s examination of form and space is carried out using material that is uncommon in the history of sculpture; she creates her three-dimensional forms with organic elements such as plant seeds, plant stems, horse hairs and dog hairs. She has produced cushions with the fluff of dandelions, constructed domes from grass stalks, created little towers from ivy seeds, and so on. Her sculpture are physically so small and look so delicate that it is easy to miss them at first. Once you observe them close up, however, they reveal themselves as strong constructions that dominate the space surrounding them.

Due to the uniqueness of Löhr’s materials, one might think that her concern lies in the attractive aesthetic of the organic matter she incorporates. However, Löhr utilizes plants and animal hairs because she is familiar with them from her childhood, knowing the character of these elements very well. She carries out research that examines the structure and function inherent to the materials she manipulates, constructing her works in a way that amplifies their assets. Through the connections between her materials and their surrounding space, Löhr explores mathematical law and the structures that give unity to this world and bring it together. The same is true for her works on paper, her pencil drawings and oil pastel drawings. Even though she uses the forms of plants or grasses as a motif, Löhr never traces anything that is directly in front of her. This exhibition will present a large installation comprised of horse hair and drawings.
