Old Meets New: Contemporary Art in the Sho-in Style Pavilion

Hara Museum ARC
Finished

Artists

Kazuo Shiraga, Kengo Kito, Tadaaki Kuwayama, Mika Minagawa, Hitomi Uchikura
Since opening the Kankai Pavilion - a venue where traditional art meets contemporary art - in 2008, the museum has hosted a special exhibition of contemporary art around once a year. Visitors can explore the “new” works and see what they have to say within the “old” traditional sho-in style pavilion space.
The show this year will feature works by artists connected with the internationally renowned Gutai art movement that rose to prominence during the 1950s in the Kansai region of Japan. These include a painting by Kazuo Shiraga displayed in the venue’s alcove space, as well as works by Sadamasa Motonaga. Also on display are works by Jean Fautrier, Pierre Soulages and Toshimitsu Imai, who were painters of the Arte Informale movement that were active in France during the same period as Gutai.
