Shoichi Okumura received the Institut français du Japon Prize in the 2017 Art Award Tokyo competition. His highly skilled works eschewing simple methods blend traditional Chinese landscape painting with contemporary themes. Creating dialogues between Chinese and Japanese aesthetics, his paintings reinterpret 19th century and Western art with new potential.
