Yayoi Deki
Over the years, Yayoi Deki has developed a series of work that employs a variety of national flags from places such as Uruguay, Ireland and France. Taking the colorful flags as motifs, she uses a finger stamp technique to depict countless faces and create an overall effect that is reminiscent of minimalist aesthetics. Furthermore, the colors are carefully layered so as to resemble flags waving in the wind. The numerous unidentifiable faces, which are only visible in close proximity, conjure the lives of the inhabitants of each the respective countries and regions.

This exhibition will present ten new paintings based on the idea of minority flags, which encompasses sexual minorities as well as various organizations such as Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Paralympic Games. Colors have always been as inspiration to Deki, and each of her flags is manifest with meaning that is represented through the colors and shapes used. What defines her painting is not only technique but also the pleasure expressed by the vivid colors, and the innocence and ambivalence that emanates from her magically delicate depictions.

Since her debut, Yayoi Deki has joined numerous exhibitions such as “Ground Zero Japan” (Art Tower Mito, Ibaraki, 1999) and “Roppongi Crossing 2007: Future beats in Japanese contemporary art” (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2007), together with international biennials such as “Venice Architecture Biennial” (Venice, Italy, 2000) and “It happened Tomorrow” at Lyon Biennial (Lyon, France, 2003). More recently her works have been acquired by 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Mori Art Museum and Takamatsu Art Museum.
