Kyosai Kawanabe
Kyosai Kawanabe (1831–1889) was a leading painter who lived during the tumultuous period of last days of the Tokugawa regime and the early Meiji period. He began studying under the ukiyoe master Utagawa Kuniyoshi at an early age and then moved to the Kano school, where he completed his studies at just 19 years of age. He developed many different painting styles and was not beholden to any particular school or orthodoxy. His paintings covered a wide range of subjects, form Buddhist imagery to witty caricatures infused with his unique brand of humour. Kyosai is considered a master of his art, and this exhibition, chosen from the acclaimed private collection of Israel Goldman, displays the wide range of his artistic output.
