Shukei Sesson
Shukei Sesson was a Japanese painter in eastern Japan during the Sengoku period (1467-1603). He was the child of an army general but was deeply devoted to painting and traveled throughout the eastern provinces to areas now known as Fukushima, Kanagawa and Ibaraki, where he was born. He is an enigmatic figure that remains mysterious, but the one thing that is known is that Sesson continued to produce exceptionally innovative Japanese ink paintings that are full of humanism. This is the largest retrospective of his works to date, consisting of approximately 100 major works by Sesson and about 30 related works by other artists. Sesson is a fascinating painter who can be considered a forerunner to artists such as Jakuchu Ito and Kuniyoshi Utagawa, who were known as painters of fantasy. Enjoy this overview of Sesson’s work and explore the genesis of fantasy in his works.
