Motohiro Tomii went through the following process to create these works: 1) Apply paint to paper 2) Cut out the painted section of the page 3) Turn over the page 4) Connect the backs of the paintings. These are reliefs with color, not colored reliefs. Color is not applied to form, form is given by applying color. While there is spontaneity, there is little freedom in this approach in which form arises from the page it comes from. These works underscore the hidden workings behind what we see, making us question the authenticity of our perceptions and positions.
