Artists

Akira Fujimoto, Aliki van der Kruijs
Akira Fujimoto has been collaborating with Arita Porcelain Lab, a historic yet innovative kiln in the traditional Arita porcelain field, since 2014 on the Arita Porcelain Project. As an artist, Fujimoto engages himself in bringing new life to dead stock he finds in the kiln’s storage, freeing these items from traditional taboos and restrictions.
On the other hand, Aliki van der Kruijs graduated from ArtEZ University of Visual Arts, Arnhem with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion in 2007, later graduating also from Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam with an Master’s Degree in Applied Art in 2011. Her works visualize unseen forms found in “material” and “nature,” exemplified in media such as textiles and photography. Her works have been exhibited around the globe, including in Amsterdam, New York, Milan, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo and more. Invited by Creative Residency in Arita, organized by Saga Prefecture and made possible by Creative Industries Fund NL, van der Kruijs has been and has been carrying out research in Arita since September 2017. This exhibition will introduce new expressions developed during her residency, combined and introduced as several chapters that comprise “Album Arita,” which brings a fresh approach to the 400-year history of Arita porcelain.
Fujimoto and van der Kruijs are both artists who have been fully immersing themselves in exploring new expressions in Arita, thoroughly taking advantage of their unique cultural backgrounds and perspectives. This exhibition consists of two parts, with the installation changing during the exhibition period. The second half opens on Jan. 9.
