Kishio Suga
Kishio Suga, a member of the “Mono-ha” group active in the 1960s and 1970s whose aim it was to simply bring “things” (mono) together in artworks, is considered one of key figures in Japanese postwar art. Following “Mono-ha,” Suga continued to take varied approaches to materials, substances and space, expressing the abyss of existence that forms a part of “things” based on his personal philosophy, which resonates with Eastern concepts. While Suga has continued to deepen his thought, pursuit and expression, there has been renewed international interest in the “Mono-ha” group, which has recently come back into focus. Since his first solo exhibition is 1968, Suga has held numerous exhibitions in Japan and overseas, the international activities he has been involved in since last year representing an important period in the history of his practice over the last five decades. This is Suga’s sixth exhibition at Tomio Koyama Gallery, his last being the 2015 show “Intentional Scenic Space,” and around 30 new works ranging in scale will be presented.
