Tokyo University of the Arts, Virtual Department of Games

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
Games influence both the way we think beyond the sphere of gaming and the real world itself, penetrating every aspect of daily life. Even the word “game” is slippery, referring to something that is constantly changing and cannot be pinned down. In one moment it may refer to content, and in another it could be describing a concept. Games as a concept have expanded with the evolution of technology, spreading from entertainment to include fields such as medicine, education, and management. But how has their status changed in terms of art and culture?
This exhibition is based on the idea of what would happen if Tokyo University of the Arts established a Virtual Department of Games, dedicating a space to this imaginary department for a limited time in the University Art Museum. There, master’s students and graduates of the Graduate School of Film and New Media will receive advice from Square Enix and have chance to experience games inspired by the world of animation. The exhibition will include exhibits introducing the game production process, lectures by top creators from Square Enix who worked on “Final Fantasy XV,” and a four-day workshop with professor Andreas Kratky of the Interactive Media & Games Division at USC School of Cinematic Arts. Through collaborations between between artists and game creators, and the exploration of a hypothetical curriculum for the Tokyo University of the Arts Virtual Department of Games, new discussions about what games and arts are, and what they face, will be explored.
