Artists

Shinya Imanishi
In his paintings Shinya Imanishi applies thick layers of oil paint to the canvas, leaving traces of his forceful brush strokes that are then scraped away through repeated actions. What gradually comes into view when you observe his canvases from a distance is reminiscent of crumbling buildings, decaying flowers, lightning bolts and storm clouds - all images associated with change, disappearance and degeneration. At the same time, however, his works also appear to suggest regeneration and reconstruction, indicating that death (the end) and life (the beginning) are inextricably linked. While exploring the boundaries and relationships between materials and the image, and viewpoints and distance, Imanishi attempts to express the ambiguity and uncertainty of what he is seeking. The title of this exhibition, which will present 15 new works by the artist including large-scale work five meters in size, is “Isanatori.” The term refers to a poem from “Manyoshu,” which is thought to be the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, dating back to the Nara period in the eighth century. Imanishi, who was born in the ancient capital Nara, has a deep interest in traditional Japanese culture having grown up in such close proximity to so much history.
