Eric Carle
Eric Carle is known around the world for his colorful picture books, which most notably include “The Hungry Caterpillar.” This exhibition will present his work, addressing children’s dreams and aspirations, their daily life and discoveries, according to four themes. “Animals and Nature” will introduce Carle’s beloved creatures, while “Travel” will trace the appearance of numbers, days of the week, and the 12 months in his works. The “Legend and Fantasy” section will include books not yet available in Japanese, and “Family” will focus on heartwarming stories about mothers and fathers. See the intricate collage of Carle’s world will unfold across the exhibition.

Known as a “Magician of Color”, Carle’s use of strong color was inspired by the work of Franz Marc and Henry Matisse, which he encountered during his youth spent in Germany. This exhibition will look back over Carle’s life as an author, considering the influence of figures such as Marc, Paul Klee, Matisse and others, in addition to his exchanges with picture book authors including Leo Lionni. Carle’s creative activities extending past picture books will also be explored, taking into account his three-dimensional works and stage design, as well as his love for and connection with Japan, expressed in his picture book collaboration with Kazuo Iwamura. Organized with the full cooperation with The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, Massachusetts, USA, around 160 works will be on display here, including original drawings.
