Lawrence Weiner
Solo exhibition by New York-based artist Lawrence Weiner, who since the 1960’s has pursued an interest in language, symbols and the imaginative power that they evoke. For Weiner, who has consistently considered his art as “information,” artworks are initially communicated to the audiences by becoming an imaginary event; each viewer has a unique background from which their draw on and experience things, something that Weiner considers to be a positive factor.
The brand new works presented here are composed of words such as “water,” “salt water,” “freshwater,” “neutrons” and “graphite” as well as sentences, symbols and figures that relate to them. Water, saltwater and freshwater are types of physical matter, but they are classified by language in a way that indicates their functions, properties, conditions of existence and so forth. The relationships created by sentences, symbols, and figures have the power to produce skewed connections that do not exist in reality. For Weiner, his works approach the viewer’s recognition of logic, time and space.
In this exhibition, several Japanese translations that have been prepared by the gallery appear alongside the English text written by Weiner. In order to complete the work, these translations have been written in consultation with the artist, who has selected the words in the texts according to their nuance.
