Yoshihisa Shirai
Typesetting is one design elements of typography, referring to the craft of physically arranging and setting type on the page. It is also the title of this long-awaited solo exhibition by Yoshihisa Shirai, who works predominantly in the field of book design and editorial design. While it introduces a lineup of beautiful book bindings, this somewhat unconventional show will also present a selection of pages printed mainly in a single black ink color arranged side by side.
When one thinks of Shirai, what immediately comes to mind is his ten year stint working on the art direction for the highly respected design magazine “Idea.” Despite it being a bimonthly publication, each and every issue can be considered a work worthy of any collection. Shirai has also been involved in the creation of many other books to date. When working of these, he takes into careful consideration the objects, situations, and people they concern, using this as a basis to produce each page to perfection. His unique approach is echoed in every text, with his personal touch - be it lighthearted, solemn, or stylish - shaping every publication. Encountering his innovative typesetting results in an unforgettable reading experience.
In this exhibition, reference materials used by Shirai during the production stage will be presented alongside works by him. See how he cites and references pre-existing works, changing the face of typesetting as he goes.
