Six and a half years ago Japan was shaken by a massive earthquake that sparked the onset of an unexpected shadow of uneasiness that gradually spread across the lives of those throughout the country. Questions began to be asked around nuclear accidents, as well as Japan’s self-defense forces, the relocation of the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, constitutional amendments, and conspiracy theories regarding hate speech. Look outside of Japan, and you see the world failing to find solutions to the refugees crises and immigration issues. It is against this backdrop that political expression has become common in Japan over the last few years.
This year’s three-day festival is organized around the theme “Neo-political - Our Festival.” Numerous artists will contribute works produced with their personal interests and concerns in mind. Though they appear to be far from politically engaged at first glance, it can be said that such personal expressions feed into larger narratives. This is a new from of political expression created from small parts from the ground up.
