Amelia Midori Miller, Augustus Nazzaro
Two-person exhibition by Amelia Midori Miller and Augustus Nazzaro that will showcase 12 new paintings. For this event, Miller and Nazzaro have created pairs of paintings based on a single shared reference image. The married artists chose the title of the exhibition - “Isseki nichou (Kill two birds with one stone) - for its multilayered meaning. The idiom that exists in both English and Japanese has been interpreted in multiple ways here, including the idea that one painting can be seen on a superficial and literal level, as well as a deeper metaphorical level.
Miller overlays additional components to their shared image, further complicating the narrative. The choice of botanical illustrations is a metaphorical nod to the human reproduction and developmental stages of life. Nazzaro, working in a reductive manner, chooses to negate information and compositional elements in order to strip the image further, attempting to achieve more with less.
