Shinnosuke Yoshida
Solo exhibition presenting twenty of Shinnosuke Yoshida’s latest paintings.

In this show, Yoshida highlights the idea of the “invariant” through his transmuted artworks. According to American psychologist James J. Gibson, an invariant is constancy that shows up when something is variegated. Yoshida attempts to release his attachment to his artworks and face them fully by being true to himself, allowing his works to evolve in such a way as to adapt to changing environments or conditions. Through doing this Yoshida believes the aspect that never changes becomes apparent - this being his invariant.

In his early works, Yoshida depicted both the natural and the artificial, combining examples of nature with man made structures such as dams, revetments, and buildings. He suggested faith and respect for human agency in figurative motifs with a degree of anonymity. However, his thought towards nature completely changed after the devastating earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, 2011. In context of the destructive power of nature, the artificial objects he described became symbolic of confusion and collapse. In addition, Yoshida questioned general information provided to the public about the nuclear accident that it caused. Even though he could not experience the threat with his physical senses, the fear of invisible radioactive material changed his view of everyday life.
