Conservation Course Sculpture Laboratory 2017

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
The majority of sculptures designated as Important Cultural Properties in Japan are Buddhist statues, and an overwhelming percentage of these are made of wood. The ability to conserve these masterpieces in the face of history and the elements is no less remarkable than the creation of contemporary sculptures themselves. This exhibition features work by the faculty and graduate students of the Conservation Course Sculpture Laboratory at Tokyo University of the Arts. See examples of Important Cultural properties they have worked on, their replicas of other statues, and the results of research using 3D laser scanners. There will also be gallery talks explaining how the conservationists go about their work.
