We don’t just hear sound, but also see it, experience it as vibrations, and associate it with smells. We also use sound to gain an understanding of the volume and distance at times. This is because the information that we obtain through “listening” to sound is informed not only by our ears, but also by our other perceptive senses, as well as past experiences, the environment and other factors. For example, if you shake a tambourine, you can see each of the small cymbals around the rim shake, while also feeling the vibration in your hand. And when it rains, we can often smell the raindrops while also hearing them. We can even gauge the size of a space by the way it sounds, like when you shout in loud voice inside a cavernous gymnasium.
This year’s ICC Kids’ program, entitled “Oto no ba: Sound-digging with the senses,” will present not only works for the ear but also pieces featuring sound that can be experienced with a range of senses. Discover new ways of listening.
