Fujisawa City Art Space

Artists

Yayoi Kusama, Nobuya Abe, Tsuruzo Ishii, Shozo Uehara et al.
Matsumoto City is surrounded by the Japanese Northern Alps and Utsugushigahara, one of Japan’s famous peaks. On the other hand, Fujisawa City is known as the Miami Beach of the Orient. In 1960, citizens of the two cities began an exchange whereby they could share their rich nature. The two sister cities have now spent more than half a decade sharing resources across a range of fields. On this occasion, works from the Matsumoto City Museum of Art collection will be presented at Fujisawa City Art Space. Matsumoto City Museum of Art opened its doors in 2002 with the goal of promoting art from a broad perspective, encompassing music and theater as well as traditional arts. Rooted firmly in the community, this art museum has presented work by renowned contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, who was born in Matsumoto City, as well as the work of individuals such as calligrapher Shinzan Kamij and Western-style painter Kazuo Tamura.

This exhibition will introduce around 40 works of art owned by Matsumoto City Art Museum, introducing work by artists connected to Matsumoto City as well as artworks that reflect the stunning nature of the region. In addition, approximately 20 paintings, prints and sculptural works by Kusama, one of Japan’s leading artists, will be presented.
