Acting in unexpected ways can produce interesting results and affect value concepts in various ways. This is true in terms of how art affects its audience, but also in medicine, where science struggles to explain things such as the now well-known “placebo effect.” In the Edo period (1603-1868) there are records of “sowaka” incantations being used in medicine, with many common people advocating their positive effects. This is until the it was later widely accepted that these so-called spells were just misappropriated words. In the realm of art, you have artists like Marcel Duchamp presenting an inverted urinal with his signature on it. The forces at work in such examples change form and alter with time, referred to in various terms such as “aura” and “mystical powers.”

This group exhibition will present a range of artworks that address themes of chaos and mystical forces, i.e. that which cannot be reduced simply by language or reason.

Venue: First Floor Exhibition Room.
