Shin Yanagisawa
Shin Yanagisawa (1936-2008) made his debut in 1958 in the Minolta Camera magazine “Rokkor.” In 1961 he suffered a severe bout of tuberculosis that lasted 18 months, after which he enthusiastically embarked on a career in photography for magazines.
In the ordinary places that he encountered on his travels he produced works of great originality, rather unlike any photographer before or since. In these landscapes Yanagisawa draws the viewer into the photograph with an unique sensibility, based on a detached sentiment and striking composition with an unusual sense of distance from the subject.
This exhibition will include 15 works produced in the 1960s and 1970s, including both vintage and modern prints. During his life, Yanagisawa’s photographs were introduced in just four solo exhibitions. This event, therefore, represents a rare opportunity to see the prints of one of the Japanese masters of photography.
