Kurt Hauert
Kurt Hauert, born in 1924 in Aarau, Switzerland, is a graphic designer, educator and visual artist. His prolific design practice spans multiple decades and can be seen expressed in his posters, catalogues and exhibitions. Hauert attended Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel (AGS) in the late 1940s where, soon after, in 1950, he began teaching alongside notable figures such as Emil Ruder and Armin Hofmann. Hauert continued to share his creative pursuits with students at AGS for 35 years, placing an emphasis on honing a “discerning eye.” Since his retirement in 1988, he has continued to pursue drawing. This exhibition, organized mainly by typographer and graphic designer Helmut Schmid, a former student of Hauert’s, includes the early typographic work “five squares on an adventure” (1956), posters and catalogues, and the more recent “Trial” drawings, produced using computer software.
