Exhibition introducing the work of three artists/artist units: Junya Sato, Nobuhiko Murayama, and Nina Beier & Marie Lund.
Over the last few years, Junya Sato has regularly created drawings by spreading coins left in his wallet at the end of the day on a canvas and tracing the outline of their shape. In this exhibition, works selected from out of over 100 drawings
will be presented either on display or exhibited inside a box. The abstract, monochromatic images are suggestive of great streams in human society, such as the circulation of currency and the social activities associated with it.
Nobuhiko Murayama explores how to express the optical experience of seeing a thing through painting, taking ancient sculptures exhibited in overseas museums as a motif. The image of these sculptures, painted by pushing paint through from the back of the coarse cotton linen through to the front of the canvas, is faint and blurred, but has a strong sense of presence, as if an image has been etched on the retina. His artwork is an abstraction of the sense of time hidden behind images.
Nina Beier & Marie Lund will exhibit framed vintage posters works that were initially exhibited in 2008. The theme of these posters is the protest of war; however, viewers can hardly see the contents as the posters themselves are folded in half. Their artworks challenge viewer on the “perception of images,” presenting objects that are themselves barely visible.
The “images” produced through these three different approaches quietly but satisfyingly permeate the viewers’ instincts and experiences.
