Everyday Holiday Squad
Current Shibuya is no longer “a city of youth and freedom,” which it used to be. In this exhibition, Everyday Holiday Squad will present new works about the distorted society that Shibuya exemplifies. Currently undergoing large reconstruction projects in preparation for the Olympics, Shibuya’s Miyashita Park, which was previously open to the public, is now surrounded by a white wall forbidding entry. EHS will showcase a work utilizing the space inside this wall. In another installation, the squad will focus on bicycle parking crackdowns by converting abandoned bicycles into public art. Other works also address the changes happening in Shibuya and Tokyo.
EHS believes Shibuya’s current state gives it the potential to be a place where new street culture can be realized. The exhibition will be installed not only inside the gallery, also but on the streets of Shibuya and the Nishi Azabu area where Snow Contemporary is located. Bringing changes directly to the streets, EHS will not show a transformed city to viewers, but allow them to witness the process of how the squad transforms it, taking viewers along as accomplices. Building an accomplice relationship is an act of creating new public zones (said to have collapsed in the 19th century) – It attempts to revoke authority by playing pranks on the emotions and behaviors of the public. EHS makes a game out of building its own squad room, traditionally a place where police officers assemble for roll calls and duty assignments.
