Parplume is an artist group that established its activities with “Parplume Yobiko (cram school),” recruiting young people from throughout Japan to come together through SNS and form an art community that combines the old and the new by conducting online art exhibitions and art criticism. This exhibition offers a comprehensive introduction to Parplume by presenting hundreds of highly diverse artworks, by-products of these works and other related materials. The Parplume artists will reside at the venue during the exhibition period, giving impromptu lectures and allowing space for happenings and artistic creation to occur freely.
Parplume Yobiko was established by artist Yoichi Umetsu in the home in which he lives and works. While employed for several years as a care worker in a residential home for seniors, Umetsu viewed Parplume Yobiko not only as an experimental art institution, but also as a center for thinking through issues such as family, gender and old age. While the young people that join Parplume are looking for a connection between art and community, the school itself attempts to revise the economics of art and democratize the discipline once again. Parplume will occupy the museum for two weeks, using it as an exhibition space, an educational institute, an atelier, a living space, and a classroom where lectures are held each day during the exhibition period.
