Toshitaka Nishizawa believes that to be aware of the subject and context of something is to be conscious of the space that surrounds it. In order to explore the meaning of a space, Nishizawa sculpts the reverse of it - what lies behind it. For him, space is always adjacent to us, existing in all places. The reverse of the space, however, is ambiguous and lacks any concrete qualities. By unifying these contrasting elements - the “front” and what lies “beyond”, Nishizawa explores the meaning of the matter in question.
