Artists

Kota Kinutani
Sculptor Kota Kinutani spent his childhood in Rome and Venice, Italy, and in recent years has studied abroad in Germany and Brazil. In his artworks he explores the idea of “how to live” when faced with forming an identity as a Japanese person while surrounded by the environment and customs of other countries.

As a child, Kinutani often climbed over the sculptural fountains that so often furnish public squares throughout Italy, looking into the reflections in the water’s surface as he did. In Eastern philosophy there is a belief that the earth’s stone contains the universe’s aura, and that stone and the clouds are organically bound together. Touching the stone of the fountains as a child, Kinutani’s experience of viewing these works was unconventional; climbing on them and lying on them, he experienced the sculptures with all five senses. It is this type of interaction with materials that now shapes his artistic practice. A selection of his works will be presented here.
