Hiroshi Yamazaki

More than 200 works outline the career of the pioneering conceptual photographer and filmmaker Hiroshi Yamazaki from a contemporary perspective. Yamazaki’s work allows us to experience the limitless abundance and passage of time contained within the phenomena of light. Always working within set frameworks or using simplified methodologies, Yamazaki succeeds in tackling universal motifs such as the sun, the sea, or the cherry blossom. His works hint at the relationships between subject and apparatus or subject and image, creating rich expressions of light and achieving a tranquil aesthetic.

In the early 1970s Yamazaki questioned the conventional method of “searching for a good subject and photographing it,” experimenting instead with the idea of “photographing without selecting a subject.” His work can be characterized concept-based and inclusive of unexpected incidents that occur in the process taking the pictures. The two elements of “concepts and incidents” function mutually in his work.

All of Yamazaki’s major series are represented here, including “Heliography,” in which he used an extremely long exposure to capture the light of sun as it crosses the sky, as well as “Collectable Horizon,” “Cherry Blossom,” and films created in tandem with his photography. This exhibition is part of TOP Museum’s celebration of its 20th anniversary and traces the true essence of Yamazaki’s world of expression through his 45-year career.
