Since it was established, World Press Photo has encouraged the highest standards in photojournalism. The resulting archive is not only a record of more than half a century of human history, but a showcase of successive styles in visual storytelling. View the entire collection of winning images from the 60th World Press Photo Contest, selected from 80,408 photos made by 5,034 photographers from 125 different countries.
The contest was divided into eight different competitions (Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, People, Sports, Spot News) and prizes were awarded to 45 people from 25 different countries. Burhan Ozbilici from Turkey received the World Press Photo of the Year, first prize single for his image, “An Assassination in Turkey,” which depicts off-duty Turkish police officer Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş shouting after shooting Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov at an art gallery in Ankara, Turkey. Meanwhile, Magnus Wennman was awarded first prize singles in the “People” category for his work capturing the quiet figure of a young girl in a refugee camp. She and her and her family had fled their hometown of Hawija, which has been under the control of the Islamic State group (IS) since August 2014, a week earlier. Other award winning works range from shots of victorious moments in the Rio Olympics to a sea turtle entangled in abandoned fishing gear, revealing a lineup of works that show how our world looks today.
