The Taisho period (1912-1926) was a time when while young people in Japan began seeking unrestricted forms of expression, developing an innovative approach to art. Ryusei Kishida and Tetsugoro Yorozu set up the Fusain Society in 1912 and Shoji Sekine and Kaita Murayama were active in the Nika Association established in 1914. Later, in the 1920s, Tomoyoshi Murayama and others led the avant-garde movement. The energetic spirit of this period is surveyed along with an introduction to new acquisitions.
