Photographs are a form of digital data, as is music, writing, graphic design and film. In order to convert one-dimensional data into something tangible, data is inscribed; as data is not an object in and of itself, it relies on inscription to become tangible. Photographic media is used widely as a way to convert data, and digital photographs are able to give the appearance of substance, but they are also a type of “mold,” and molds are characteristically holes. Meanwhile, photographs are also said to be a kind of mirror - something that reflects real objects. But if a photograph is also a mold and a mold is a hole, holes are unable to reflect. It is in this space between the mirror and the hole that photographs become sculptural. The gap between contemporary photography and sculpture forms the basis of this exhibition.
