Shunkei Yahagi
This is female calligrapher Shunkei Yahagi’s fifth solo exhibition at Wako, and her first show there in four years. Yahagi has a long-established, substantial fan base thanks to the fact that she has forged her own path, not to mention the profound appeal of her work. The theme of this long-awaited exhibition is “chivalry.” Yahagi will present approximately 40 works featuring calligraphic expressions of 22 words associated with chivalry. This is inspired by the spirit of men such as novelist Natsume Soseki, warrior monk Musashibo Benkei, poet Saigyo and playwright Zeami Motokiyo. The selection will include folding screens and hanging scrolls as well as smaller pieces.
