Kumamoto Castle x Wine Night - The Road to Reconstruction, One Year on from the Earthquake

Tokyo National Museum
Finished

Artists

Mari Hashimoto, Toshihiko Tsurushima
Kumamoto Castle suffered great damage following a series of serious earthquakes in 2016. One year on and the reconstruction of the building is well underway. Initially it was thought that the castle’s keep could be salvaged, but it was later found that the cracks in the pillars and other areas were too severe, and in April 2017 the plan to disassemble and rebuild this section anew was revealed.
This event welcomes Mari Hashimoto, vice-chairperson of Eisei Bunko (private museum of Hosokawa dynasty) and Toshihiko Tsurushima of Kumamoto Castle Research Center to discuss the latest restoration and reconstruction work being carried out on the castle. Their talk will be accompanied by photographs of the site and various historical materials. A tasting where you can enjoy different wines from Kumamoto will follow their discussion.

Venue: TNM & Toppan Museum Theater (B1, Asian Gallery, Tokyo National Museum)
