Hogalee
The title of this exhibitin, “carpe diem,” can be translated from Latin as “seize the day.” It has also been used as an expression of pleasure-seeking in view of death/life, and, by contrast, as what we call a “momento mori” or death knell. Following his solo-exhibition in 2013, titled “Plagiarism,” Hogalee has taken the subject of originals and copies, tracing, and homage and parody in his paintings and murals. Rather than exploring artists and art movements subject to plagiarism, here Hogalee frames structures and formations of contemporary art put in place by his forerunners to position the “Tokyo girl” largely considered an icon of Japanese society today. Here Hogalee displays his trademark thickness of line in monochromatic works.
