Yuichi Yokoyama “Art of Paints”

Artists

Yuichi Yokoyama
This exhibition is comprised of works painted on board that Yuichi Yokoyama produced in the 1990s after graduating from university. During this period he submitted the works to publicly sponsored exhibitions, which despite his continued efforts was to no avail. In an interview conducted at the time of his Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition, Yokoyama expressed his thoughts regarding the works painted on thin veneer board, which he considered to as being of ‘the cheapest material.’ In a somewhat self-depreciating manner he commented, ‘I thought that painting was over, and felt as if I was really being driven into a corner. Like being 5 points behind at the 9th inning of the game.’ 25 years later, however, it is likely that the artist himself is surprised by how enticing and radiant these works are.
