Goichi Takeda
Architect Goichi Takeda (1872-1938) helped establish modern architecture in Japan. While creating diverse architectural works throughout his lifetime, Takeda also poured his energies into education and fostering young talent. Wide-ranging architectural materials and metal samples collected under his supervision are preserved at Kyoto University’s Undergraduate School of Architecture, which he helped found, and Kyoto Institute of Technology, where he taught design. While educational in purpose, the materials can be considered “architectural specimens” that Takeda acquired as a passionate collector, motivated by strong curiosity and an interest in taxonomy.
This exhibition features some 100 “architectural specimens” collected in the early decades of the 20th century when Takeda was involved in education. They are presented in the following categories: “New Materials,” “Trends of the Times,” “Modern Lifestyle,” “Revisiting Classical Style,” “Early 20th Century Design Expression,” and “His Path as a Lecturer.” While broadly examining the diverse materials and techniques of Japanese architectural design in the early days of modernization, we show Goichi Takeda’s world view as an architect who hungrily absorbed influences of all kinds.
We wish to thank everyone whose efforts have made this exhibition possible.
